Competing against the Mazda MX-5 Miata, Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro, Cabrio was eventually replaced by a convertible version of the Volkswagen New Beetle after being manufactured for nine years.
Volkswagen Cabrio made its debut in 1994 for the 1995 model year and was offered in only one body style, 2-door convertible. It came in three trim levels, however: GL, GLS and GLX and was built based on the larger Mark III Golf platform. Cabrio got a facelift in 1998 with the front, rear, and steering wheel styling from the Golf Mk4 while still maintaining the body from the Mk3 Cabiro and that is why it was also refered to as the Mk3.5 Cabiro. During its whole life, Volkswagen Cabrio was powered by 2.0 L inline 4-cylinder engine rated at 115 horsepower and 122 lb-ft of torque and this engine sent power through 4-speed automatic and 5-speed manual transmissions to the front wheels.
